SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
No. 1 seed TCU ran its streak to 11 straight victories vs. MWC teams with a 4-0 win over No. 2 seed BYU to capture the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship at Barnes Tennis Center. TCU became the third team in MWC history to claim both the men's and women's tennis conference tournament titles in the same season, joining BYU (2001) and San Diego State (2003).
The 16th-ranked Frogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. MWC Freshman of the Year Anna Sydorska teamed with Andrea Morgado at No. 2 doubles to defeat BYU's Sofia Holden and Dolly Chang (8-6), while Helena Besovic and Ana Cetnik defeated the Cougar tandem of Anastasia Sourkova and Jennifer Miccoli (8-6).
Cetnik gave the Frogs the second point of the match with a two-set victory over BYU's Holden (6-2, 6-0) at No. 4. TCU's Nicole Leimbach defeated BYU's Olga Boulytcheva (6-4, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, while Gloriann Lopez upended the Cougars' Jennifer Miccoli (6-2, 6-4) at No. 6 singles to secure the championship. TCU's win today stopped BYU's quest for a third straight MWC Tournament title.
Both the men's and women's teams at TCU will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tennis Championships. Official team brackets for the NCAA Tennis Championships will be announced Wednesday, May 3, while singles and doubles entrants will be announced Thursday, May, 4.
