BYU To Play UNLV In The MWC Women's Tennis Championship Final No. 5 seed Utah defeats No. 8 seed Air Force, 4-0.
April 29, 2005 SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - No. 1 seed and No. 23-ranked BYU defeated No. 4 seed San Diego State, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship, Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Cougars will face UNLV in the final match tomorrow at noon. BYU came out strong in doubles winning at both No. 2 and 3 doubles, as the Cougars dropped just three games in those two matches combined. Dolly Chang and Lauren Jones won at No. 2 doubles, 8-1, while Olga Boulytcheva and Sofia Holden won at No. 3 doubles for the Cougars. In singles play, BYU won at No. 3, 4 and 6 singles to clinch the match. Sofia Holden defeated Indra Erichsen of SDSU in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, to earn the winning point for the Cougars. Dita Hauerlandova and Nina Spaeth earned singles wins for the Aztecs. In the second consolation match of the day, No. 5 seed Utah defeated No. 8 seed Air Force, 4-0. Utah earned wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles to earn the point, then got singles wins at No. 3, 5 and 6 to earn the shutout. Cheyenne Reveche, Cinthia Saucedo and Jen Wencel all earned singles wins for Utah. BYU faces No. 3 seed UNLV in the championship match Saturday at noon. The Lady Rebels advanced earlier on Friday with a win over No. 2 seed New Mexico. For the Cougars, it is their second straight championship match appearance, and their third final appearance all-time. BYU won the tournament title in 2001 and 2004. Utah plays Colorado State in the consolation final at 10 a.m., Saturday.
