New Mexico and SDSU Win First Round Matches Lobos and Aztecs clinch a spot in the semifinal round.

SAN DIEGO - Top-seeded New Mexico swept the No. 8 seed Air Force, 4-0, while fourth-seeded San Diego State defeated fifth-seeded Colorado State, 4-1, in the afternoon session of quarterfinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship Thursday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. The 30th-ranked Lobos took control of the match early, winning the doubles point with victories by Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski (No. 23 in the nation) at the No. 1 position and Michelle Heidbrink and Tiffany Robertson at the third spot. Lukowski also won her singles match in straight sets at the No. 5, followed by Tjasa Suvak at the No. 6 and Iva Gersic at the No. 2 to clinch the win for New Mexico. No. 72 San Diego State took an early 1-0 advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. After the Rams won at the No. 3, the 47th-ranked duo of Katalina Romero and Indra Erichsen defeated CSU's Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem at the No. 1 spot to claim the first point of the match. In singles, Colorado State's Tatyana Ugorich tied the match at one apiece with her victory at the number five. SDSU stepped things up a notch, winning the final three matches of the contest. Indra Erichsen beat Carla Pallares at No. 3, while Dita Hauerlandova defeated Emily Kirchem, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot. Alesya Vidov brought home the win by beating Charity Malone, 7-6 (3), 6-3 at the No. 4 position. New Mexico, now 19-3 on the season, will play San Diego State (9-14) in semifinal action on Friday at 2 p.m. at Barnes Center. Air Force falls to 13-13 on the year and will face Colorado State (11-12) in the 2 p.m. match in the consolation bracket on Friday. (4) San Diego State 4, (5) Colorado State 1
