SAN DIEGO - Second-seeded and 22nd-ranked BYU defeated seventh-seeded Utah, 4-0, while third-seeded and 54th-ranked UNLV shut down sixth-seeded Wyoming, 4-0 in the morning session of quarterfinal round of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship Thursday morning at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The Cougars' Rebecca Pike and Lu Owald and Hadley Macfarlane and Lauren Jones teamed for victories at the number three and two doubles positions, respectively, to win the first point for BYU. Barbora Zahnova (No. 1), Sofia Holden (No. 2) and Macfarlane (No. 6) were victorious in their respective singles matches, to clinch the win for the Cougars.
The doubles pairs of Gyorgyi Zsiros and Claire Smith and Cindy Treber and Mery Constanti collected wins at number two and number three doubles, respectively, to earn the doubles point for the Rebels. UNLV went on to win straight set matches at the number one, three and five positions in singles play to finalize the sweep.
BYU and UNLV face each other in the semifinal round of the winner's bracket, while the Utes and Cowgirls meet in the backdraw Friday at the Barnes Center. Both matches are scheduled for 9 a.m.
