No. 6 Wyoming Upsets No. 3 San Diego State to Advance to the Semifinals of the 2011 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship
April 28, 2011 FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The sixth-seeded Wyoming women's tennis team secured the doubles point and three singles victories en route to a 4-3 win over third-seeded and 50th-ranked San Diego State on Thursday at the University Tennis Complex on the campus of Colorado State. After claiming the doubles point, the Cowgirls took singles matches at the No. 1, 3 and 4 positions to advance to the semifinal match. Wyoming won the doubles point as the tandem of Rebecca Berger and Alexandra Kovacs defeated Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, 8-6, at the No. 2 doubles position and the duo of Simona Synkova and Kim van Ginkel followed with an 8-4 victory over Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison at the top of the doubles lineup. The Cowgirls' van Ginkel secured the first singles victory of the match, recording a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Emma Cioffi at the No. 4 position. The Aztecs quickly evened the dual with back-to-back wins at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Sierra Ellison downed Berger, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot, and moments later Wais recorded a straight-sets decision over Kovacs, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 position. The Aztecs jumped out to a 3-2 lead after a 6-2, 6-4 win by Roxanne Ellison over Sasa Nerncova at the No. 6 position, but Wyoming responded with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, to win the dual. After Synkova evened the match with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Aguilar at the No. 3 position, Veronica Popovici closed out the dual for Wyoming, netting a three-set victory over Julia Trunk (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) at No. 1 singles. The Cowgirls will face second-seeded Utah in the tournament semifinals on Friday at 10 a.m. MT.
