BYU Crowned 2001 MWC Women's Tennis Champions Cougars wrap up perfect season vs. MWC opponents.

Ft. Collins, Colo. - Top-seeded BYU narrowly defeated second-seeded San Diego State, 4-3, to win the 2001 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship title. The Cougars earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.
BYU earned the doubles point by winning two doubles matches in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. In singles play, BYU struck first with Cougar Lindsey Ferrell defeating Aztec Julie Chidley, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot. San Diego State responded by winning matches in the No. 2, 4 and 5 positions.
Eventually, BYU and San Diego State came to a 3-point tie. The deciding match came down to the No. 3 singles match. After two hours and ten minutes of play, BYU's Lu Oswald swept San Diego State's Whitney Wells, 7-5, 6-4 to win the title match.
BYU has gone undefeated, 10-0, against MWC opponents and 15-8 on the year. San Diego State finishes with an 8-2 record in the MWC and 17-8 on the year. The Aztecs only conference losses have been 4-3 decisions to BYU.
BYU head coach Craig Manning was named MWC Coach of the Year at the end of the tournament by a vote of league coaches. This is a first time honor for the second-year head coach.
BYU heads to the NCAA Regional Championships May 12-13. The 2001 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship takes place May 17-25 in Stone Mountain, Ga.
