Ninth-Seeded Colorado State Defeats Eighth-Seeded New Mexico in Opening Round of the 2011 Mountain West Women's Tennis Championship
April 27, 2011 FORT COLLINS, Colo. - After securing the doubles point, ninth-seeded Colorado State racked up three singles wins en route to a 4-3 win over eighth-seeded Colorado State Wednesday in the opening round of the 2011 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the University Tennis Complex in Fort Collins, Colo. The Rams improve to 9-13, while the Lobos fall to 9-14. The first women's dual of the tournament began with the doubles point going to Colorado State. CSU's Caitlin Fluegge and Tori Arneson recorded the first victory of the match, downing the Lobo tandem of Anya Villanueva and Ashley Bonner, 8-1, at the No. 1 position. The Rams clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 position, with Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz capturing an 8-4 decision over Nikolina Grbac and Michaela Oldani. New Mexico's Nikolina Grbac notched a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lauren Mulhern at the No. 3 position to tie up the score at 1-1. The Rams reclaimed the lead when Kaley Schultz defeated Kristin Eggleston at the No. 4 position, 7-5, 7-5, but New Mexico pulled even moments later, as Anya Villanueva downed Tori Arneson 6-0, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), at the second singles spot. New Mexico's Michaela Bezdickova earned a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-3) decision over Caitlin Fluegge at the No. 1 position to draw the Lobos to within one match of victory, but CSU tied the match for a final time following a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3 victory by Veronika Wojakowska over Michaela Oldani at the fifth singles position. In the deciding match of the dual, Colorado State's Melissa Holzinger notched a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win over Laura Richardson to propel the Rams to victory and a quarterfinals matchup with top-seeded UNLV on Thursday.
