USAFA, Colo. - No. 1 seed BYU defeated No. 5 New Mexico, 4-1, Friday to advance to the finals of the 2007 MWC Women's Tennis Championship at the Air Force Academy. The Cougars will face No. 3 UNLV in the championship at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rebels upset No. 2 TCU, 4-2.

The UNLV Rebels used some solid doubles play and an exciting three-set clinching singles match to defeat TCU, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships Friday at the Air Force Academy. UNLV, seeded No. 3 at the tournament, improved to 19-6 and will face top-seeded BYU in the finals on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. TCU, the No. 2 seed, fell to 17-10.

The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Frogs' No. 2 team of Ana Cetnik and Kewa Nichols got off the court first after an 8-2 victory over Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfelde. UNLV roared back, however, and claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The nation's 20th-ranked team of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva rolled past Anna Sydorska and Nina Munch-Soegaard, 8-4, at No. 1, then UNLV's No. 3 team of Claire Smith and Alisa Razina took care of Andrea Morgado and Karine Ionesco, 8-6, to clinch the point.

Sydorska gave TCU its first point of the match with a decisive, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nedeltcheva at the No. 2 spot. Gantcheva, ranked 66th in the country, put the Rebels ahead for good with a 6-3, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot over Munch-Soegaard.

Smith gave UNLV a 3-1 lead by defeating Ionesco, 6-3, 6-4, but TCU's Cetnik, ranked 54th in the nation, closed the gap to 3-2 at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dimitrova. Tempelfelde clinched the match for UNLV with a dramatic come-from-behind 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Nichols at the No. 4 spot.

The No. 5 match between Razina of UNLV and Morgado of TCU was halted at 5-all in the third set.

The top-seeded BYU Cougars cruised into the finals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-1 victory Friday over No. 5 seed New Mexico at the Air Force Academy. BYU, ranked 31st in the country, improved to 20-6 and will face third-seeded UNLV on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. With the loss, New Mexico fell to 12-11.

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches. BYU's No. 3 team of Kristina Doerr and Sofia Holden downed Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott, 8-3, then its No. 2 duo of Lauren Jones and Dolly Chang defeated Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba, 8-2. With the doubles point clinched, the No. 1 match was halted at 6-all.

BYU's Anastasia Surkova, ranked 89th in the country, continued the strong play by the Cougars at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Abou-Zekry for a 2-0 lead. Ryba then pulled the Lobos to within one with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Chang at the No. 6 spot.

Holden put BYU up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Scott at the No. 5 spot, and Jones won the clincher at No. 2 singles, triumphing over Zmak, 7-5, 6-2.

The Nos. 3 and 4 matches were pulled when BYU won the team match.
