Quarterfinal Action Wraps Up at 2007 MWC Women's Tennis Championships

TCU, UNLV, BYU and New Mexico advance to the semifinals.

USAFA, Colo. - Quarterfinal action at the 2007 MWC Women's Tennis Championship ended Thursday with TCU, UNLV, BYU and New Mexico advancing to Friday's semifinal rounds at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

The TCU Horned Frogs advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a dominating 4-0 victory Thursday over Wyoming at the Air Force Academy. TCU, seeded No. 2 at the tournament and ranked 38th in the country, improved to 17-9 and will face UNLV in the semis on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. Wyoming completed its season with a 6-15 record.

TCU took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Frogs' No. 2 team of Ana Cetnik and Kewa Nichols rolled past Michelle Brown and Corina Lazar, 8-1, while their No. 1 duo of Anna Sydorska and Nina Munch-Soegaard clinched the point with an 8-4 victory over Karolina Rowinski and Andrea House. TCU completed the sweep as Andrea Morgado and Karine Ionesco downed Carolina Chaix and Jamie Nelson, 8-5, at the No. 3 spot.

The momentum continued for TCU through singles play as Munch-Soegaard, ranked 99th in the country, defeated Rowinski, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 position for a 2-0 lead. Cetnik, the 54th ranked player in the country, made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Brown at the No. 3 spot, while Morgado clinched the team match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nelson at No. 5.

The other three matches were pulled once TCU won the match.

Despite losing the top two singles matches, the UNLV Rebels advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-2 victory Thursday over Utah at the Air Force Academy. UNLV, seeded No. 3 at the tournament and ranked 56th in the country, improved to 18-6 and will face TCU in the semis on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. With the loss, Utah fell to 13-11.

UNLV took an early 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. The Rebels' No. 3 team of Alisa Razina and Claire Smith downed Andrea Maughan and Karine Bourdages, 8-2, while their No. 1 duo of Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva, ranked 20th in the country, clinched the point with a 9-7 victory over Elizabeth Ferris and Leigh Walsh. Utah won the No. 2 match as the Ute duo of Emily Kwok and Cheyenne Reveche pulled out a 9-8 victory over Nikol Dimitrova and Linda Tempelfeldt.

Kwok tied the team match at 1-all for Utah with a decisive, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Nedeltcheva at the No. 2 singles spot. UNLV regained the lead at 2-1 as Smith won the No. 6 match, defeating Bourdages, 6-3, 7-6(4).

Ferris evened the match again with an impressive, 7-5, 6-4 victory over the 66th-ranked Gantcheva. UNLV then clinched the team match with a pair of three-set victories at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots. Dimitrova downed Walsh at No. 4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, while Tempelfeldt ended it with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision over Maughan at No. 5.

The No. 5 match between Razina and Reveche was halted with Razina leading 5-3 in the third set.

The top-seeded BYU Cougars rolled past Colorado State Thursday and advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a 4-0 victory over the Rams at the Air Force Academy. BYU, ranked 31st in the country, improved to 19-6 and will face the No. 5 seed New Mexico in the semis on Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Colorado State finished its season with a 10-12 record.

The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches, each by an 8-2 score. Their No. 2 team of Lauren Jones and Dolly Chang downed Anette Pohjalainen and Lauren Strasberger, while at the No. 3 spot, the BYU duo of Kristina Doerr and Sofia Holden defeated Sarah Seltsam and Greer Satherlie. With the doubles point clinched, the No. 1 match was halted with BYU leading, 6-5.

BYU continued its dominance in singles play, winning three matches in straight sets. Holden was the first off the court, taking care of Pohjalainen, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 position. Chie Hayasaka followed suit with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Laura Neal to give the Cougars a 3-0 advantage and Jones clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Strasberger.

The other three matches were pulled when BYU won the team match.

The New Mexico Lobos advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championships with a convincing 4-0 victory Thursday over the 52nd-ranked San Diego State Aztecs at the Air Force Academy. New Mexico improved to 12-10 and will face the No. 1-seed, BYU, in the semis on Friday, April 27 at 2 p.m. San Diego State fell to 14-11 record.

The Lobos jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches, each by an 8-2 score. UNM's No. 2 team of Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba downed Holly Bagshaw and Kathryn Kitts, who moved up to the No. 2 spot after teammate Ellie Krausova was unable to play. At the No. 1 spot, the UNM duo of Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott clinched the doubles point by downing Alesya Vidov and Milana Yusupov. With the doubles point clinched, the No. 3 match was halted with UNM leading, 7-6.

New Mexico kept its momentum into singles play, as the Lobos won three matches in straight sets. Abou-Zekry, ranked 116th in the nation, gave the Lobos a 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vidov at the No. 1 spot, while Ryba made it 3-0 by winning the No. 6 match, 6-2, 6-3, over Ozge Atalay. Zmak put the match away with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Bagshaw, who moved up from No. 3 in place of Krausova.

The other three matches were halted when UNM won the team match.
