SDSU Defeats BYU In Second Round Of MWC Women's Tennis Championship

Aztecs to play for conference title on Saturday.

Provo, Utah - Regular season champion SDSU and second seeded UNLV will battle for the title in this year's MWC Women's Tennis Championships. Both teams won in semifinal women's tennis action, Friday.

San Diego State, who's ranked 28th nationally defeated hosts BYU 4-1 in the afternoon match, while UNLV, ranked 19th nationally, beat New Mexico in the morning semifinal match.

The Aztecs took control of the match by winning the doubles point and then picking up wins at the number one, three and five singles positions. BYU, who is the defending MWC champion, was able to pick up one point in singles with Liza Khoudoiarova's win at number six singles. She defeated the Aztecs' Julie Ana Chidley 6-2, 6-2.

In the other afternoon dual match, it was Utah finishing victorious with a 4-0 win over Wyoming. The Utes led early with the doubles point and then added three more with wins in singles play. Linn Ronnberg, Ellen Svensson and Allison Hansen won their singles matches in straight sets for Utah. The other matches in progress were not finished.

Utah will battle Air Force for fifth place in the 10 a.m. match on Saturday with San Diego State and UNLV playing at 2 p.m. The winner of the conference tournament gets an automatic bid in the NCAA Championships that will be played at Stanford, beginning May 16.
