Utes Down Cowgirls 4-0 at MWC Championships Cowgirls face Colorado State in seventh place match Saturday.
April 26, 2002
Laramie, Wyo. -- The University of Wyoming women's tennis team lost in the consolation round of the Mountain West Conference Championships Friday, bowing 4-0 to Utah. The MWC Championships, held in Provo, Utah and hosted by Brigham Young University, conclude tomorrow. The eighth-seeded Cowgirls topped the number-five seed Utah 4-3 in the regular season but weren't able to overcome a solid Ute squad this time around. Cowgirl sophomores Jenny Bowman and Jen Hancock landed Wyoming's only win of the day, topping Irini Kotoglou and Allison Hansen 8-3 in no. 1 doubles. The Utes, however, roared back with wins in no. 2 and no. 3 doubles play to grab the doubles point and establish a 1-0 lead. Utah then closed out the match by picking up three singles wins. Linn Ronnberg defeated Yuliani Santi 6-1, 6-2 in no. 2 doubles, Ellen Svensson topped Jen Hancock 6-2, 6-3 in the third position and Allison Hansen clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ivana Milosevic in no. 6 singles. The other matches in progress weren't finished. The Cowgirls (6-15) return to the court Saturday, facing Colorado State in the seventh place match. The Rams topped UW 6-1 in Laramie earlier this season.
