Air Force beats CSU, 4-3, at MWC Championships Parsons clinches match with three-set win
April 26, 2002
The Air Force women's tennis team held on to defeat Colorado State, 4-3, Friday in the consolation round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championships in Provo, Utah. The match came down to the number one singles match between Air Force's Brooke Parsons and CSU's Sanja Hansson. Parsons prevailed in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, to win her 25th singles match of the year and send the Falcons into Saturday's fifth-place match against the winner of tonight's Utah-Wyoming match. Air Force took the early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Falcons made it 2-0 after Laura Nigro beat the Rams' Amanda Bartz 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles match. CSU then came back to tie it up 2-2 with straight set wins at the Nos. 3 and 4 positions. The Rams' Sasha Zhurn gave her team a 3-2 advantage after winning the No. 5 match over Air Force's Gina Black 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Air Force tied it up again at 3-3 when Ashley Gee beat Alezandra Paganetti, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot. That set up the dramatics for the final match. The Falcons, 15-10, will play at 11 a.m. MT on Saturday morning. Colorado State will face the Utah-Wyoming loser for seventh place.
