Colorado State Upsets UNLV In First Round Of MWC Women's Tennis Championship Rams to face second-seeded San Diego State Friday at 2:00 p.m.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State women's tennis team opened the 2001 Mountain West Conference Tennis Tournament with a 4-2 upset victory over the UNLV Rebels. The win marked the first time in school history the Rams have advanced past the first round of the conference tournament and helped Colorado State avenge a tight 4-3 loss to the Rebels during conference play. The Rams advance to take on No. 2 seed San Diego State, Friday at 2 p.m. Junior Catherine Sullivan's 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory at the No. 5 singles spot clinched the match for the Rams. Also victorious for the Rams in singles play were Amanda Bartz at the No. 3 spot (6-1, 6-2) and Allison Lisle at No. 4 (6-3, 6-1). Colorado State took the first point of the match thanks to a thrilling 9-7 victory by Morena Jovisic and Brenna Tindall at No.2 doubles. Head Coach Jon Messick said he couldn't have asked for a better start to the tournament for his team. "It was a fantastic first round performance against a good team," Messick said. "The players fought hard and I'm really proud." Tournament action resumes Friday morning with No. 1 seed BYU meeting No. 4 seed New Mexico at 10 a.m. on the CSU varsity courts.
