FT. COLLINS, Colo. - Top-seeded BYU defeated seventh-seeded Wyoming, 5-0 in the first round of the 2001 Mountain West Conference Tennis Championships at the CSU Tennis Courts Thursday.

The 31st-ranked Cougars captured the doubles point and completed four of six singles matches to ensure the victory over the Cowgirls. BYU gave up only four points in doubles play and swept each of their singles matches. No. 39-ranked Jodi Richardson was perfect in her 6-0, 6-0, victory over Wyoming's No. 1 player Jenny Bowman.

The Cougars improve to a 13-8 overall record and remain unbeaten in the conference at 8-0. The Cougars face fourth-seeded New Mexico Friday at 10:00 a.m. on the CSU tennis courts. Wyoming, who dropped to 5-14 overall (0-8 MWC), will face fifth-seeded Utah, Friday at 10 a.m. at the Edora Tennis Courts. New Mexico narrowly defeated Utah, 4-3, in the first round of the championships.
