April 25, 2002
SAN DIEGO - The 28th-ranked and top-seeded San Diego State women's tennis team won for the 12th time in its last 13 matches, defeating eighth-seeded Wyoming, 5-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Thursday in Provo, Utah.
The Aztecs will now face fourth-seeded and tournament host Brigham Young tomorrow at 2 p.m. MDT in a rematch of last season's championship match. The Cougars defeated the Aztecs 4-3 to claim last season's conference title, although San Diego State posted a 5-2 victory over BYU earlier this season.
San Diego State dropped just 10 singles and doubles games in coasting to its fifth straight victory. The Aztecs claimed the doubles point with a pair of 8-1 victories in number two and number three doubles. Indra Erichsen and Silvia Tornier, who were named to the all-conference doubles team on Wednesday, were winners at number two, while Lindsey Hedberg and Julie Anna Chidley claimed the victory at number three.
The Aztecs did not need much time to clinch the team victory. Chidley was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Toni Terhaar at number six singles. San Diego State dropped just two games in claiming victories at number two and five singles. Hedberg, who earned all-league singles honors yesterday, was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number two. At number five, Erichsen posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Katalina Romero was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number four singles.
San Diego State won despite Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Silvia Tornier not getting a victory at number one singles. The Aztec junior was up 6-2, 5-3 when the Aztecs clinched the victory and the match was stopped.
San Diego State improves to 17-7 overall while Wyoming falls to 5-14.
