No. 6 Utah Upsets No. 3 San Diego State to Advance at the Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship
April 23, 2009 ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - 2009 MWC Tennis Championships Central San Diego State vs. UtahThe sixth-seeded Utah Utes upset No. 3 seed San Diego State, 4-3, on Thursday at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship. Utah improved to 10-12 on the season, while SDSU fell to 17-8. Utah jumped out to a 1-0 lead after capturing doubles matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The Utes' duo of Erin Monson and Andrea Maughan led off play with an 8-3 victory over No. 68 Holly Bagshaw and Julia Trunk at the No. 1 slot. Utah's Anastasia Putilina and Lisa Johnson followed with an 8-5 win over Esther Cadua and Milana Yusupov at the bottom position to clinch the point. Putilina began the singles scoring for Utah with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over San Diego State's Julia Trunk at the No. 1 position. Evegina Kryuchkova continued the Ute scoring with a 6-0, 6-4 win over SDSU's Esther Cadua at the No. 3 spot. San Diego State got on the board with Holly Bagshaw's straight set win (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 2 position. San Diego State pulled within one point with Sierra Ellison's win over Lisa Johnson at the No. 6 position, while Milana Yusupov tied the contest with her win over Lexi Provancha at No. 5 singles. The contest came down to the No. 4 position, where Utah's Leigh Walsh pulled out a come from behind win over SDSU's Roxanne Ellison (1-6, 7-6 [7-5], 6-4) to clinch the Utah victory. Utah advances to face second-seeded TCU in the women's tournament semifinals Friday, April 24, at 10 a.m. MT.
