No. 8 Wyoming Defeats No. 9 Air Force in Opening Round of 2009 MWC Women's Tennis Championship

The University of Wyoming lives to see another day as they defeat Air Force , 4-3, Wednesday in the opening round of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Championship at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center in Albuquerque, N.M. The Cowboys improve to 8-15, while the Falcons fall to 10-17.

In doubles play Wyoming came out ahead and never looked back. In No. 1 doubles Wyoming's Sarah Summerfield and Carly Can Hollen started out 2-1 and never let Air Force's Christine Abayan and Erlyn Rudico within three. Summerfield and Hollen captured the win at, 8-4.

Rebecca Berger and Jamie Nelson of Wyoming came out swinging at No. 2 doubles as they defeated Air Force's Christen Monreal and Allie Chermel, 8-4. Berger and Nelson were ahead 4-1 early in the match and never let Air Force within three.

At the start of the match Air Force was already up 1-0 due to a win by default. Wyoming didn't let that slow them down. After winning at No. 3 and No. 1 singles Wyoming tied the score at 2-2. To keep fans on their toes singles two, four and five all split sets. After losing the first set, 2-6, Rebecca Berger came back to win the next two at 6-0, 6-2 to give Wyoming the 3-2 match lead. Carolina Chaix sealed the victory for Wyoming defeating Katrina Eromin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 5 position.

Wyoming advances to the quarterfinal round and will face top-seeded UNLV, Thursday, April 23, at 2 p.m. MT.
