Fort Collins, Colo. - Colorado State University softball coach Teri Klement today announced that she has resigned her position to pursue a berth on the 2000 Olympic softball squad which will compete in Sydney, Australia, this summer.

"This was an extremely difficult decision to make," said Klement. "But I had to make this decision. I greatly appreciate the opportunity that Colorado State University has given me, allowing me to coach at my alma mater."

Klement just completed her second season at Colorado State, leading the Rams to a 20-32 record, 8-12 in Mountain West Conference competition. Colorado State won two games in last weekend's MWC tournament in Salt Lake and finished third, being eliminated by evenutal runnerup New Mexico.

"We appreciate the many contributions that Teri has given to our softball program and want to wish her the best of luck in pursuing her olympic dream," said athletics director Tim Weiser. "Teri has been a valuable member of our staff as an athlete and as a coach and we appreciate all that she has done for the program."

Weiser said that associate athletics director Marsha Smeltzer would chair a search to name a replacement. That search is expected to attract widespread national interest, said Weiser.

He also said current assistant coach Dana Lillard would supervise and maintain the status of the program during the search process.

Klement graduated from Colorado State in 1991 with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science and earned All-American honors as a shortstop as a senior. She then played professionally before returning to Colorado State as an assistant coach from 1995-98.

In 1999, her first season as head coach, Colorado State was 17-24, then 19-31 this past season. She has a two-year coaching record of 36-55.
