San Diego State senior pitcher Celena Velasquez (Tucson, Ariz.) has been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District VIII softball first team. Velasquez, who boasts a 3.54 grade-point average in kinesiology, is one of three pitchers selected to the 12-member squad. She is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced May 31.

One of the most decorated players in Aztec softball history, Velasquez helped SDSU earn a bid to this year's NCAA tournament, as the team claimed the Mountain West Conference regular season title with a 32-13 overall record. The right-hander is 9-5 overall this season with a 3.47 ERA in over 86 innings of work.

Velasquez is the first Aztec softball player to earn all-MWC honors each of her four seasons and was named the conference's pitcher of the year in 2003 and 2004. She has garnered MWC pitcher-of-the-week honors 11 times in her career and has twice earned conference all-academic accolades.

The San Diego State softball team will be back in action Friday for its first game of the NCAA tournament against Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m. at Easton Stadium, on the campus of UCLA.
