Five Rams Earn All-MWC, Munoz Named Freshman of the Year Rams tie conference champion BYU for most selections.
May 14, 2007 The Mountain West All-Conference softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced today. Colorado State earned five selections to the 20-player team, tying conference champion BYU for the most selections. Seniors Jessica Strickland and Stacey Leigh, junior Lauren Cusick and freshmen Ashley Munoz and Allison Majam each took home honors. Munoz also garnered MWC Freshman of the Year accolades. Strickland earned her fourth All-Conference nod in as many seasons, posting a .313 batting average against MWC opponents. Overall, she led the Rams with 40 RBI on the season, 14 in conference play. She also recorded four home runs and four doubles to go along with a .563 slugging percentage during the Rams' conference slate. Cusick picked up her third consecutive selection, posting a .339 batting average with two home runs, four doubles, six RBI and tying Strickland and Majam for the team-lead with 18 runs scored in conference play, which ranked second in the MWC. Cusick also posted a .518 slugging percentage in the Mountain West. Leigh earned the first All-MWC honor of her career after posting a .426 batting average, second on the team and fourth overall in the Mountain West conference, during conference play. Her .475 on-base percentage ranks fourth in the conference, as did her 17 RBI against Mountain West opponents. She also posted a .989 fielding percentage behind the plate for the Rams, committing just one error in conference action Majam led the Rams on the season, hitting .371 in 57 contests. In conference action, she ranked fourth on the team, hitting .362. She accounted for six home runs, eight doubles, a team-best 25 hits, 21 RBI, 18 runs and 69 at bats against MWC foes. Her 25 hits in conference play ranked second in the Mountain West, while her 21 RBI and eight doubles ranked first. She ranked sixth in the Mountain west with a .739 slugging percentage and was third in total bases with 51. Munoz ranked first in the Mountain West in slugging percentage (1.000) and total bases (56), and second for on-base percentage (.528) and home runs (9), leading the Rams in each category. She also ranked third for batting average (.429), RBI (18) and doubles (5). Overall, she leads Colorado State in slugging percentage (.699) and her 14 home runs ties the single-season record set in 2004 by Brittany Huerta. Munoz's selections as Freshman of the Year is the first such award for a CSU player since Strickland received the honor in 2004.
