COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU will represent the Mountain West Conference in the 2007 NCAA Softball Championship. The Cougars earned the automatic bid to the championship after winning the MWC regular-season crown with a 16-4 league record.

The Division I championship consists of 64 teams. Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and will play at campus sites this weekend.

The Cougars (41-18) will host the Provo Regional for the second consecutive year, and will begin with competition from Cal Poly (39-15) on Thursday, May 17. The other opening-day game in Provo, Utah, will feature Southern Utah (29-29) vs. No. 7 seed Arizona State (49-15).

BYU will be making its third consecutive appearance and fourth overall in the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars hold a 2-6 all-time record in the championship.

Team pairings were determined by geographical proximity, with the exception that teams from the same conference were not paired during regional competition, when possible.

The regional winners will advance to the super regional competition for a best-of-three series May 23-24 at eight campus sites.

The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double elimination tournament. The championship final will be a best-of-three-series. The WCWS will be conducted May 29 - June 1 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
