COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State and San Diego State will represent the Mountain West Conference in the 2003 NCAA Softball Championship. This marks the second time in league history that two teams from the MWC were selected. The Rams earned the automatic bid to the championship with their 3-1 win over the Aztecs in last week's Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in San Diego. San Diego State received an at-large bid for the second time in three seasons after finishing the regular season with a 38-19 record.

This is the first year for the 64-team bracket. Eight teams will participate at each of eight regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. Eight teams will be seeded and each of the seeded teams will be placed at one of the regional sites. Regionals will be conducted May 15-18.

The Rams are the No. 8 seed in the Region 1 tournament in Tucson, Ariz., and will start off with top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Arizona at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 15. The other opening day games in Tucson will be Minnesota vs. Cal State Northridge, Texas A&M vs. Boston College and South Carolina vs. Princeton.

San Diego State will be the fifth-seed in the Region 6 tournament, hosted by Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs will open with fourth-seeded and 22nd-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette at 9 a.m. on May 15. The other games on the first day in Fullerton are Cal State Fullerton vs. Rider, Oregon vs. Penn State and Oklahoma State vs. Boston University.

The regional winners advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double-elimination tournament. The WCWS will be conducted May 22-26 at the ASA Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
