MWC Player and Pitcher of the Week

UNLV's Sampsonl and BYU's Andersen garner weekly honors.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior outfielder Lisa Sampson and BYU junior right-hander Niki Andersen have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Sampson, a Fairfield, Calif., native, helped the Rebels to three conference victories in four games last weekend, batting .778 (7-for-9) from the plate and hitting safely in all four games played. She started the week going 3-for-5, with a run in the Rebels' doubleheader split with BYU. In game one of UNLV's series sweep over Utah, Sampson smashed an RBI double to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth as the Rebels went on to win 4-3. In the series finale, she went 3-for-3, including a three-RBI double and a run scored in the bottom of the seventh as part of a five-run rally that tied the score at 6-6 and sent the game into extra innings. The Rebels went on to win, 7-6, in eight innings. On the week, Sampson had three doubles, four RBI, three runs scored and was walked four times, while turning in a fielding percentage of 1.000. She is batting .329 with 24 RBI, 11 doubles and 22 runs scored this season.

Andersen, from Sandy, Utah, posted a 2-0 record with seven strikeouts in two appearances for the Cougars last weekend, while giving up only six hits, two walks and one earned run in 12.0 innings. In BYU's 10-4 game two win over UNLV, she struck out four, while scattering three hits in 5.0 innings of work. Andersen concluded her weekend notching a complete game victory over San Diego State, striking out three and giving up only three hits and a walk as the Cougars completed their sweep over the Aztecs with a 4-1 win. On the season she is currently 18-6, with 116 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.27 in 148.0 innings on the mound.
