COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The All-Mountain West Conference Softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced today in conjunction with the start of the inaugural Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah. The championship begins today and runs through Saturday, May 13, at Ute Field on the University of Utah campus.

Regular-season champion Utah swept the special awards. Junior pitcher Kristin Arbogast was named the Player of the Year, freshman designated player Niki Hayhurst claimed the Freshman of the Year and Mona Stevens was selected the Coach of the Year. Favored to win the preseason title in the preseason poll, Utah came through with a 15-5 conference record and finished the regular season 36-21 under Stevens' direction. Arbogast posted a 34-17 record and currently stands second in the nation in victories. She made 51 starts and 54 appearances for 320 total innings and led the league with 186 strikeouts. Hayhurst led the conference with a .451 batting average in league games and hit .369 in all games as a rookie.

The 20-member all-conference team includes five players from regular-season champion Utah, and four from runner-up New Mexico and fifth-place Colorado State. Third-place San Diego State received three selections, while BYU and UNLV earned two.
