COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado State Rams claimed their first ever regular-season Mountain West Conference softball crown after winning the first two games of a four-game series with New Mexico on Saturday. The victories over the Lobos earned the Rams (40-13-0 overall, 16-4-0 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Softball Championship in Fort Collins, Colo.

San Diego State earned the second seed with a 14-6-0 record in MWC play and finished the regular-season with a 36-22-0 overall record. BYU finished third in the league with an 11-8-0 mark (34-17-0 overall), while Utah claimed the fourth seed, posting a 8-12-0 league record (20-31-0 overall). The fifth and sixth seeds will be UNLV and New Mexico, respectively. The Rebels finished MWC play with a 7-13-0 record (25-34-0 overall), while the Lobos finished 3-16-0 in league competition and 29-34-0 overall.

The conference tournament will take place May 13-15 at Ram Field on the campus of Colorado State University. The opening game will see third-seeded BYU taking on the No. 6 seed New Mexico at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 13. No. 4 Utah and No. 5 UNLV will be the other opening round match on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. Colorado State and San Diego State will receive opening round byes. The Aztecs will play the winner of BYU and New Mexico at 2 p.m. on Thursday, while the Rams will go against the winner of Utah and UNLV Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

The Mountain West Conference Softball Championship game will be on Saturday, May 15, at 2 p.m. MST with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the 2004 NCAA Softball Championship.
