COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The All-Mountain West Conference Softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced today in conjunction with the start of the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in Provo, Utah. The championship begins tomorrow (Thursday, May 9) and runs through Saturday, May 11, at Gail Miller Field on the BYU campus.

UNLV's Geney Orris claimed Player of the Year honors, while San Diego State freshman Bre DeSanta captured the Pitcher of the Year award as well as Freshman of the Year acclaim for the regular season champion Aztecs. SDSU's Kathy Van Wyk collected Coach of the Year. The Aztecs, picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll, finished 14-4 in conference play and 39-21-1 overall to win their first regular season title as members of the MWC.

Orris, a Brea, Calif., product has a .331 batting average, and leads the MWC in total bases (114). She is also second in doubles (14), third in slugging percentage (.630), RBI (41) and home runs (13), and fourth in on-base percentage (.419), runs scored (36) and hits (59). On the mound, she has nine wins on the season, with a 2.54 ERA and 76 strikeouts. In MWC action, Orris is second in ERA (1.68) and third in wins (5).

DeSanta, from Scottsdale, Ariz. (Horizon HS), is 18-8 on the year and leads the MWC in eight pitching categories, including ERA (1.08, 37th in the nation), strikeouts (142), saves (6, 5th in the nation) and appearances (43). In her first season as an Aztec, she was a perfect 9-0 in conference play, posting a new MWC all-time single-season conference low 0.83 ERA (MWC games only). DeSanta also won MWC Pitcher of the Week honors a single-season record six times this season.

The 20-member all-conference team includes seven players from San Diego State, four players from New Mexico and Utah, three players from BYU and two from UNLV.
