COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU designated player Brooke Cadiente and San Diego State right-handed pitcher Sandra Durazo are the Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the first player of the week honor for Cadiente this season and the fifth pitcher of the week award for Durazo.

Cadiente, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz. (Mountain View HS), hit .538 (7-for-13) with eight RBI, three runs scored, two home runs and a double in four games last week. The Cougars won three of four games against Utah and captured their first MWC regular season title in just their second season of varsity softball. Cadiente opened the four-game series 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and a home run in the 14-7 loss at Utah. She was 1-for-3 with a walk in BYU's 5-1 victory in the second contest. After returning to Provo for the final two games, Cadiente was a perfect 3-for-3 and drove in four RBI in the 14-11 win, three of which came in the fifth inning when she hit her 11th home run of the season. Cadiente went 0-for-2 in the regular season finale, but hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in the fifth inning that clinched the title and the top seed in next week's Mountain West Conference Tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.

Durazo, a senior from Granada Hills, Calif. (John F. Kennedy HS), recorded a 3-1 record and posted a 0.47 ERA after pitching every inning ñ 30 innings - for San Diego State this past weekend. She did not allow an earned run in her last 17.0 innings on the mound and struck out 28 batters, while walking six. In the first game of the weekend, Durazo tied a 2001 MWC league game-high with 12 strikeouts in the 4-1 victory over Colorado State. The Aztecs posted a 2-1 win over the Rams in the second game of the double-dip as Durazo allowed just one earned run off of seven hits, while striking out seven. Durazo recorded her sixth shutout of the year in SDSU's 1-0 win over New Mexico in a nine-inning affair on Sunday. In the second game, she suffered her lone loss of the weekend, 1-0, to the Lobos. In the four contests over the weekend, Durazo limited batters to 11-for-57 with runners on base (.193), including 6-for-31 with runners in scoring position. Durazo is 24-14 with a 1.36 ERA on the year and has earned all 10 of the Aztecs conference wins this season.
