MWC NOTES

The MWC Race As the final weekend of the regular season approaches, San Diego State stands in first place with a 13-5 conference record. BYU is close behind in second, holding an 11-5 mark with four games remaining. Utah is still in the hunt as well, holding a 10-6 league record. The winner of the MWC regular season will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In The Rankings
San Diego State continues to be ranked in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 21 and in the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 19 this week. BYU is also receiving votes in both polls.

BYU
The Cougars continue their slugging rally, as they hit five homers last week and have 72 homers overall...Despite splitting the four-game series with Utah, the Cougars were awarded the Deseret First Duel Rivalry Series trophy based on overall runs scored...BYU is two wins shy of recording its fourth consecutive 40-win season.

Colorado State
Offensively, Colorado State boasts an impressive team batting average (.312) and has recorded a team slugging percentage of .523 on the season...Six Rams (Lauren Cusick, Caitlan Stem, Ashley Munoz, Allison Majam, Julia Kloppe and Rebecca Penland) are leading the way, currently batting over .300, with Cusick (.403) in second place in the MWC...Those six players have accounted for 75 percent (186 of 248) of the team's RBI and are also responsible for 77.8 percent (49 of 63) of the team's home runs...The 2008 squad is closing in on several single-season CSU records...As a team, the Rams are currently in the top spot with a .523 slugging percentage, surpassing the 2004 squad with a .521 slugging percentage...They are also third in batting average with a .312, just .015 points behind the 2004 squad that sits in first place.

New Mexico
New Mexico will play its first TV games at Lobo Field in school history and will appear on TV for the second time this season...The Mtn. will broadcast both games of the twinbill with Utah...The Lobos are chasing a winning season this weekend and will try to finish above .500 for the first time since 2001...UNM is 23-24 overall heading into Thursday's doubleheader with Utah...Sophomore Katie Gilmore is leading the Lobos with a .413 batting average in MWC play...Gilmore has scored six runs on 19 hits including five doubles, while recording eight RBI in 16 games and has two stolen bases.

San Diego State
With a 1-0 win over New Mexico on Sunday, SDSU tied a school record with its 41st victory, but this year's team did it in the least amount of games at 41-15...The 2002 squad finished 41-22-1, while the 2001 team was 41-25...The Aztecs are 23-5 (.821) at home this season and 7-3 (.700) in road contests...Tamani Wells passed Tracey Stowe (1990-92) as the school's all-time leader with her 51st sacrifice bunt on Sunday...The sac bunt was her 21st of the season, which ties Joann Figueroa (2002) for third-most in a single-season...Christina Ross earned her 26th career shutout on Sunday to move into second on the all-time charts, two behind Sandra Durazo's 28 from 1998-2001...It was also Ross' 47th appearance of the season, which ties Durazo for the most in a single campaign.

UNLV
UNLV's Laura Briones notched her third and fourth game-winning hits this past weekend, as she was responsible for giving the Rebels the lead in each game of the New Mexico doubleheader....She singled in a run in the 6-3, game-one win, while smashing a sixth-inning grand slam in the come-from-behind 5-3 game-two win...UNLV's Ashli Holland is riding her second eight-game hitting streak of the season...Currently, she is hitting .272 and has raised her batting average 114 points since the Rebels jumped into MWC action on April 5.

Utah
After a weekend split against BYU, the Utes remain in contention to win the MWC regular season...They are currently in third-place with a 10-6 record, while San Diego State is first (13-5) and BYU second (11-5)...To finish in first place, the Utes need to win their remaining four games...They have a chance to finished tied for first if they win at least three games...Utah last won the MWC regular season title in 2001...Diana Phillips has 14 career triples (three this season) and ranks second all-time at Utah in the category...The all-time triples record is 19, held by Sandy Rhea (1995-98).
