COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The San Diego State Aztecs claimed their third regular-season Mountain West Conference softball crown after sweeping Utah on Sunday, May 7, in San Diego. The two victories over the Utes earned the Aztecs (30-11-0 overall, 15-3-0 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Softball Championship in Las Vegas, Nev.

BYU earned the second seed with a 15-5-0 record in MWC play and finished the regular-season with a 40-18-0 overall record, marking the Cougars second consecutive 40-win season. Utah finished third in the league with a 10-8-0 mark (34-19-0 overall), while UNLV claimed the fourth seed, posting an 8-12-0 league record (24-35-0 overall). The fifth and sixth seeds will be Colorado State and New Mexico, respectively. The Rams finished MWC play with a 6-14-0 record (26-24-0 overall), while the Lobos finished 4-16-0 in league competition and 23-29-0 overall.

The conference tournament will take place May 11-13 at Eller Media Stadium on the campus of UNLV. The opening game will see third-seeded Utah taking on the No. 6 seed New Mexico at 11:30 a.m. PST on Thursday, May 11. No. 4 UNLV and No. 5 Colorado State will be the other opening round match on Thursday at 2 p.m. San Diego State and BYU will receive opening round byes. The Cougars will play the winner of Utah and New Mexico at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, while the Aztecs will go against the winner of UNLV and Colorado State Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Mountain West Conference Softball Championship game will be on Saturday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m. PST with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the 2006 NCAA Softball Championship.
