COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The All-Mountain West Conference Softball awards as selected by the league's six head coaches were announced today in conjunction with the start of the Mountain West Conference Softball Championship in San Diego. The championship begins tomorrow (Thursday, May 8) and runs through Saturday, May 10, at SDSU Field on the San Diego State campus. BYU's Oli Keohohou and Colorado State's Steph Roberts were named Co-Players of the Year, while San Diego State freshman Celena Velasquez captured the Pitcher of the Year award as well as Freshman of the Year acclaim for the regular season champion Aztecs. Colorado State's Mary Yori collected Coach of the Year. Keohohou has an MWC-leading .445 batting average. She also leads the Mountain West in slugging percentage (1.059), on base percentage (.610), runs scored (55), RBI (45), home runs (19), total bases (126) and walks (50). Nationally, she currently ranks second in home runs, 14th in batting average and 22nd in RBI. Roberts is batting .364 on the season and leads the MWC in stolen bases with 17. She also is second in the conference in runs scored (44) and doubles (13) and has a .636 slugging percentage, a .462 on base percentage and eight home runs. In MWC play, she leads the conference in hits (25), runs scored (22), home runs (7) and total bases (53), and is second with a .424 batting average and .898 slugging percentage. Velasquez is 13-6 on the year and ranks in the top five in five pitching categories, including ERA (1.53, third) and opposing batting average (.215, fourth). In her first season as an Aztec, she was 6-2 in conference play, posting new MWC all-time single-season lows in ERA (0.81) and opposing batting average (.144) in conference games. Velasquez also pitched two complete game one-hitters this season and was an MWC Pitcher of the Week honoree twice. The 20-member all-conference team includes five players from San Diego State, four players from BYU and Colorado State, three players from New Mexico and Utah and one from UNLV.
