Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week Utah's Hayhurst and SDSU's DeSanta take home conference honors.
May 7, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah junior first baseman Niki Hayhurst and San Diego State freshman pitcher Bre DeSanta have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Hayhurst, a Keizer, Ore., native, hit .818 (9-for-11) for the Utes last week, with three home runs, three doubles, 10 RBI and four runs scored. She had two or more hits in three of four games, including a 4-for-4 effort with two home runs (one grand slam), six RBI and two runs scored in Utah's, 8-6, game one victory over New Mexico. She followed that with a 4-for-5 performance in Utah's sweep of Colorado State. Against the Rams, Hayhurst hit her third homer of the week, had two doubles, three RBI and scored a run. Defensively she recorded 23 putouts, had five assists and no errors. On the season, Hayhurst is batting .291 (.476 in MWC play), with six home runs, 31 RBI and a .491 slugging percentage.
DeSanta garnered her MWC single-season record sixth pitcher of the week award with her complete game victory over UNLV last weekend. Against the Rebels, she tied her career-high in strikeouts (8), while scattering three hits, walking two and giving up just one earned run. With the victory, DeSanta finished conference play with a 9-0 record. Heading into the MWC Championship, DeSanta has a record of 18-8 and leads the conference in seven categories, including ERA (1.08), strikeouts (142), saves (6, tied for 5th in the nation) and appearances (43).
