Weekend Recap
BYU continues to lead the MWC race with a 10-2 conference record after sweeping the series with Utah. UNLV (9-5) holds on to second place, despite getting swept by Colorado State and going 2-1 vs. New Mexico. The Lobos (7-5) are the only other league team with a conference record above .500.
Television Tidbits
The Mountain West Conference 2007 softball broadcast schedule includes an unprecedented 11 games on national and regional television. The television exposure provided by the MWC broadcast partners far exceeds the softball coverage in the previous seven-year history of the league. Seven games will be shown on the MountainWest Sports Network - The Mtn., while four games will be broadcast live nationally on CSTV.
This week's UNLV at San Diego State game on Saturday, May 5, will be televised live on CSTV, beginning at 6 p.m. PT.
National Honors
San Diego State's Erin Floros was named to the initial "Watch List" for the 6th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. This award is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by collegiate softball players across the country. Last season, Floros became SDSU's first softball All-American when she was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA third-team and the Easton-Bell Sports first-team.
BYU
BYU is currently on a 13-game winning streak, the longest in school history...As a team, the Cougars have hit 72 home runs this season, a new school record...The team needs to win at least six of its last nine games to secure its third consecutive 40-win season...Senior Jodi Norton's home run vs. Utah Valley State ties her for BYU's single season record of 21...With 10 games to go in the season, Jennifer Whiteley is batting .415 and aiming to become just the fourth player in team history to finish a season above .400.
Colorado State
Freshman Ashley Munoz enters this weekend's matchups with Utah and BYU riding a nine-game hitting streak...She is just four games shy of tying Lauren Cusick's season-high hitting streak of 13 games...Senior Jessica Strickland is not far behind Munoz with a current hitting streak of seven games...Munoz also leads the Rams in conference action, hitting .457 (16-for-35) in 12 games played...The Rams are one of three teams in the nation to have 13 different players who have hit home runs this season...The Rams join No. 2/2 Alabama and No. 15/14 Hawai'i on that list...The Rams are also one of five teams to have eight different players with four or more home runs (Alabama 10, CSU 8, Tennessee Tech 8, Illinois State 8 and Arizona State 8).
New Mexico
The Lobos will play their final eight regular-season games at Lobo Field...UNM is 6-3 at home this season and has won two of its three conference games on home turf...Thursday's doubleheader with BYU will conclude the series with the Cougars and could have major implications in the league standings...BYU leads the conference by two games over UNLV and three over UNM...The Lobos dropped both games in Provo, Utah earlier this year and trail in the overall series, 9-22.
San Diego State
Lindsey Marquez is hitting .500 (20-for-40) with 11 runs scored over a career-long and SDSU season-long 13-game hitting streak...CF Tamani Wells had her fourth triple of the season against Colorado State on Saturday after recording no triples her first two seasons at SDSU...She is now one triple shy of tying Shannon Pouelsen's (1993) and Stacy Golf's (1987) single-season record of five...With 2/3 innings of hitless relief against the Rams on Sunday, LHP Christina Ross picked up her 21st win of the season to pass Bre DeSanta (2002) and move into third on the Aztec single-season win list.
UNLV
In the last seven games, Brittany Freight was UNLV's top hitter with a .375 average...She tied for the team lead in hits with six...On Sunday, UNLV celebrated "Senior Day" and she went 4-for-4 combined in two wins against New Mexico...Jaci Hull set a new single-season walk record for UNLV with six walks this past week...Three of those six walks came by intentional fashion against Colorado State last Friday.
Utah
Hailey Davenport has been the team's top hitter over the last five games and is smacking the ball around the park at a .533 clip, going 8-for-15 during that span...She has a team-best two home runs and also has led the team in RBI (4), slugging (.933) and on-base percentage (.588)...Second baseman Kristie Keller came on to pitch in relief against Utah State last week and got the win for the Utes...She took to the circle in the fifth, pitching two innings of work, while fanning one Aggie batter and only allowing two hits...The Utes have homered in six of their last eight games, upping their season total to 47.
