Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week UNLV's Orris and Utah's Pursell take home conference honors.
April 23, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV designated player Geney Orris and Utah righthander Jennifer Pursell have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. In two games against conference foe Utah, Orris went 4-for-7 (.571) from the plate, with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored. In game one, she belted a two-out single in the fifth inning, driving in two runs and allowing a third run to score when the outfielder mishandled the ball. In game two, the Brea, Calif., native kept the Rebels in the game hitting two home runs, driving in four runs and scoring three. Her first home run came in the top of the seventh with two on and two outs. Facing a full count, Orris belted a three-run shot to left field tying the game at four and sending it into extra innings. In the 10th inning, Orris hit a solo homer to right to give UNLV its first lead of the game. On the season, Orris is batting .333, with 54 hits, 13 doubles, 10 home runs, 34 RBI, a .611 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .419, all career highs.
Pursell, a Rancho Cucamunga, Calif., product, appeared in three games last week, finishing with a 3-0 record (two complete games) and a 1.47 ERA. She struck out 12 batters, while giving up 13 hits, five runs (four earned) and three walks in 19.0 innings of work. Pursell started the week by pitching a one-hit shutout against Cal State Northridge, striking out four and giving up four hits in the process. In game one against conference foe UNLV, she came on in relief, giving up one hit and no runs in 1.0 inning to claim the victory. In the second game against the Rebels, Pursell went the distance, striking out seven batters and giving up five runs on 12 hits, as the Utes beat the Rebels 6-5 in 11 innings.
