MWC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week BYU's Andrea Ramirez and New Mexico's Katie Gregg honored.
April 11, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU freshman shortstop Andrea Ramirez and New Mexico senior pitcher Katie Gregg have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Ramirez, from Simi Valley, Calif., batted .750 (6-for-8), with two home runs, two RBI and three runs scored as BYU went 3-1 last week, including a sweep of conference foe Utah. As the Cougars leadoff hitter, she Ramirez was a perfect 6-for-6, including three walks for a perfect 1.000 on base percentage. For the week, she also tallied a 1.500 slugging percentage and had an on base percentage of .818. In game one vs. Utah State, she was 2-for-2 from the plate, with a home run, a RBI and a run scored. Ramirez followed with another 2-for-2 performance in game two vs. the Aggies. In game one vs. Utah, she went 2-for-2 with a home run, a RBI and run scored. Defensively, Ramirez was flawless in the field, collecting two putouts and assisting on six others. Gregg, an Overland Park, Kan., native, went 1-0 in two apperances for the Lobos last week, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout along the way. She started the week tossing 5.0 innings in the second game of a doubleheader against San Diego State. Gregg then took the mound in UNM's first game vs. UNLV, holding the Rebels to one hit, while striking out seven and walking only two for her 11th win of the season.
