Weekend Recap
UNLV remains perfect in non-conference play as it swept the series with BYU and Utah. BYU stands in second place with a 2-2 record after sweeping San Diego State, but falling to the Rebels. New Mexico and Colorado State will open conference play this week after last week's series was cancelled due to weather.
Television Tidbits
The Mountain West Conference 2007 softball broadcast schedule includes an unprecedented 11 games on national and regional television. The television exposure provided by the MWC broadcast partners far exceeds the softball coverage in the previous seven-year history of the league. Seven games will be shown on the MountainWest Sports Network - The Mtn., while four games will be broadcast live nationally on CSTV.
National Honors
San Diego State's Erin Floros was named to the initial "Watch List" for the 6th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award. This award is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by collegiate softball players across the country. Last season, Floros became SDSU's first softball All-American when she was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA third-team and the Easton-Bell Sports first-team.
BYU
Senior Jodi Norton has three more home runs than she did at this time last season when she hit a career-best and MWC second-best 15 dingers...With 42 hits and 11 RBI, senior Jennifer Whiteley already has as many hits and four more RBI this season than she did in all of 2006...Freshman Angeline Quiocho has more stolen bases (10) than any three of her teammates combined...BYU had its second five-game winning streak of the season snapped with Friday's loss at UNLV...The Cougars are just three games behind last season's pace, in which the program nabbed its second consecutive 40-win season.
Colorado State
Senior pitcher Jessica Strickland became just the third pitcher in school history to reach 500 innings pitched in her career at Colorado State...Strickland surpassed 500 innings pitched in the first inning of her complete-game, one hitter against Nebraska on March 28...The Rams tried to open MWC play at home against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday, but the series was cancelled due to weather...The Rams will now open at home against San Diego State, marking just the third time in league history that CSU will open at Ram Field...Overall, Colorado State is 3-4 in MWC openers, including a 1-1 mark at home.
New Mexico
New Mexico enters the week with a 10-13 record and has a three-game winning streak... The Lobos' conference opener against Colorado State was cancelled due to weather...New Mexico will now open the conference season at home vs. UNLV and San Diego State..The Lobos are 1-6 in MWC openers dating back to the 2000 season.
San Diego State
Aztec SS/P Melissa Owens continues to lead the team in batting with a .364 average...She also leads SDSU in doubles (10), home runs (4), RBI (19), total bases (61), slugging percentage (.570) and on-base percentage (.434)...San Diego State has thrown out 53.8 percent of its opponents trying to steal...Megan McDonald has thrown out 55.6 percent (10-for-18) while Erin Floros, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, had thrown out 52.4 percent (11-for-21) prior to being injured...In 39 games, San Diego State has started 35 different batting lineups and 28 fielding lineups...The SDSU pitching staff is key to the team's success as the Aztecs are 20-2 when scoring three or more runs.
UNLV
UNLV started conference play 4-0 for the first time in MWC history...Kelli Fangonilo and Jaci Hull led the Rebels offensively this past weekend as Fangonilo hit .455 with five hits and two runs scored...Hull hit .400 with four hits, which included a double and two home runs...Stephanie Bregante notched three of UNLV's four wins on the weekend...She won two in relief and one as the starter, posting an ERA of 0.51 and limiting the opposition to a .089 batting average.
Utah
Meghan Dyer made three starts and recorded 31 strikeouts's, improving her career total to an impressive 422, ranking her fourth on Utah's all-time list...Kara Foster and Hailey Davenport rank No. 1 and 2, respectively, in the league in slugging percentage, as the duo has combined for 36 of the team's 88 extra-base hits (41 percent) thus far this year...The Utes are 2-5 in one-run games, most recently beating San Diego State, 1-0, in 10 frames...The team surrendered its first triple of the year to an opponent just last weekend... Karina Cannon's five-game hitting streak is currently the longest on the team.
