Player and Pitcher of the Week Utah's Quintero and Gourdin take home conference honors.
April 6, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah freshman utility player Devina Quintero and sophomore right-hander Brianna Gourdin have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Quintero hit .533 (8-for-15) from the plate last week, helping the Utes to three victories, including two in conference play. The Reseda, Calif., native, had two home runs, two doubles and five RBI, while hitting safely in four of five games. Against Utah State, Quintero went 3-for-3 from the plate, with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored. She also turned in a 2-for-4 performance in Utah's conference opening split with UNLV. In game one of the series split with San Diego State, Quintero had two hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving Utah the 4-3 win.
Gourdin, a Provo, Utah, product, went 3-0 in three appearances on the week. She turned in three complete games, striking out six and giving up 24 hits in 24.0 innings on the mound. She went the distance Utah's 4-2 win over Utah State, striking out two and allowing only four hits to earn the victory. She tallied her second complete game victory in game two of the doubleheader against conference foe UNLV, giving up seven hits and fanning two in six innings. Her final win of the week came in the opening game of Utah's series against San Diego State. Gourdin struck out two Aztecs in a career-high 11 innings of work as the Utes pulled out a 4-3 win.
