CSU Travels To New Mexico Rams look to end 14 game losing streak.

Last Time up at Bat - The Colorado State softball team (3-26, 0-3) lost both games of a double-header to Utah (21-15-1, 3-0-1), 6-2 and 11-7, Sunday afternoon at Ram Field in Fort Collins. In the first contest of the afternoon, sophomores Brooke Boyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Katie Benton (Manhattan, Kan.) each owned one run for the Rams, both of which happened in the bottom of the first inning. Boyer scored off Jennie Orozco's (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) sacrifice-fly to center field, while Benton crossed home plate off Amber Hecht's (So., Plano, Tex.) single to left field. Senior Kyla Kiester (Des Moines, Iowa) pitched the entire game for Colorado State and gave up six runs, all earned, off ten hits and walked three Utes after facing 34 batters. The Rams had two runs off six hits and no errors in the 6-2 loss. Niki Hayhurst had one run off two hits and drove two players home in the first game for the Utes, while Amberly Jeppson had two runs off two hits. Kristin Arbogast pitched the entire game for Utah and gave up two earned runs and walked four Rams after facing 33 batters. The Utes had six runs off 10 hits and one error in their first win of the afternoon. In the second match-up of the day, Benton led the Rams with two runs off one hit. Benton's first run came at the bottom of the third when Orozco reached first because of an error and her second came in the bottom of the sixth when Schmillen hit a double to left field. Schmillen had one run off three hits and one RBI in the 11-7 loss, scoring the run in the bottom of the third. Kai Stone (Jr., Kailua, Hawai`i) led Colorado State with two RBIs, driving Boyer home from second and junior Brit Erickson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) home from third after hitting a double to left field. Sara Doherty (Sr., Wilsonville, Ore.) pitched the first three innings for the Rams and gave up nine runs, all earned, off 10 hits and walked three Utes after facing 23 batters. Freshman Erin Murray (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) relieved Doherty in the fourth inning to give up two runs, both earned, off three hits and walked one Ute after facing 16 batters and struck out five players. On the Utes side, Hayhurst led with seven RBIs after hitting three homeruns, all to right field. The first homer came at the top of the first and the second came at the top of the third, both of which drove two players home. Hayhurst hit a third one over the fence in the top of the sixth and no other Utes were on base at the time. Heather Bowlin pitched six innings for the Utes and gave up seven runs, three earned, off ten hits and walked no Rams after facing 29 batters. Arbogast came in the game at the top of the seventh and faced five batters to give up three hits and no runs. Colorado State will return to action on Saturday (April 7) in Albuquerque, N.M. to face New Mexico for a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m. "Run, Forrest. Run." - In the second game against Utah, the Rams had the most runs in one inning for the season, with five, in the bottom of the sixth. This is the most runs that the Utes have given up so far in conference play. Four runs was the most that Colorado State has scored in one inning prior to the April 1 match-up. On Feb. 3 the Rams faced Ole Miss at the UNM Diamond Invitational and scored four runs in the top of the third and walked away with a 5-2 victory. Schmillen Ranked - In overall games, Holly Schmillen is tied at third in the conference with eight doubles, is ninth with 50 total bases and fourth with 90 assists. In just conference games, the shortstop for the Rams is tied at first with two doubles, fifth with six hits and is also tied at second with 10 assists. "On the Road Again..." - Since 1991, the Colorado State softball team has gone 2-7 at the first road conference game of the season. The last win for the Rams was at San Jose State on Mar. 7, 1997 with a score of 9-4 and the most recent loss was at New Mexico, 7-2, on April 1, 2000. Lucky Two - The Rams have given up the least runs in the second inning with 29 (1.12 avg.) out of all 29 games. With 11 games run-ruled, Colorado State has given up 24 runs in the fifth, 19 in the sixth and 14 in the seventh. Only three contests have gone into extra innings and the Rams have blanked the opponents in the eighth and allowed only two runs in the ninth. History of Competition - The Rams dropped all five meetings against New Mexico during the 2000 season and the Lobos lead the all-time series, 37-21. The two teams met in Albuquerque, N.M. on April 1, 2000 for a double-header and (the Rams conference opener) and the Lobos won both games 7-2. When UNM traveled to Ft. Collins on April 22 they won the first contest 5-2 and the second with a score of 4-3. The last meeting came at the Mountain West Conference tournament and the Lobos squeezed by with a 3-2 victory to stop the Rams from advancing. Scouting the Lobos - New Mexico is currently 28-15-1 (1-2-1 MWC), with an away record of 5-0. The Lobos opened up their conference season against Utah on Mar. 30 at home and dropped the first game, 14-5, and tied the second with a score of 5-5. The following day, UNM hosted Brigham Young and split the games. The Lobos walked away with a win in the first contest, 4-3, and lost the second, 4-1. Kelly Glass leads the Lobos with a .373 average and 41 hits, while Krissy Keene is on top with 27 runs, seven doubles and 27 RBIs. UNM has a total of 15 homeruns on the season, as well as 38 stolen-bases. Kathy Moore is in front with five homeruns for the year.
Amy Dumas leads the pitching staff with a 0.94 ERA, and is 13-2 thus
far this season. Dumas has given up 25 runs, 15 earned, off 91 hits and
has walked 12 opponents in 111.1 innings.
