MWC NOTES
Last Week's Recap
The Mountain West went 7-3 last week. BYU posted two wins over Southern Utah and a third vs. Utah Valley State. Colorado State swept its doubleheader with Northern Colorado, while New Mexico defeated UTSA before falling to Texas State. Utah also spit a series with Utah State last week. Overall, the MWC is 118-80-1 in non-conference play this season. MWC teams all start league play this week, with the New Mexico at BYU doubleheader being broadcast live on CBS College Sports Network at 6 p.m. MT.
In The Rankings
San Diego State continues to be ranked in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 22 and the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 19 this week. BYU is also receiving votes in both polls.
BYU
BYU visited Southern Utah for a doubleheader against the in-state opponent, and swept SUU...BYU scored a season-high 19 runs during the second game of the twinbill...The Cougars open their conference season on April 3 when they host New Mexico before facing Colorado State on April 4...BYU's game against New Mexico will be broadcast on CBS College Sports Network.
Colorado State
Colorado State holds the best team batting average in the MWC at .313 and also boasts the highest slugging percentage (.516)...Five Rams (Julia Kloppe, Lauren Cusick, Caitlan Stem, Ashley Munoz, Allison Majam) are currently batting over .300...Three players - Kloppe (.441), Cusick (.402) and Stem (.400) - are hitting better than .400...CSU has won four consecutive games heading into this week's conference opener at Utah and at BYU...Colorado State is 3-5 all-time in Mountain West Conference openers.
New Mexico
New Mexico is hitting .270 as a team and has three players with an average over .300...Senior Lindsey Elcess leads the team with a .405 average, while redshirt-freshman Gabriella Parra is hitting .400 and Sara Loeffelholz is at .337...Elcess also ranks among the best in the MWC, ranking in the top 10 in five categories including batting average (1st/.405), on-base percentage (1st/.500), slugging (2nd/.824), home runs (4th/9) and total bases (7th/61).
San Diego State
The Aztecs are 15-8 against 2007 NCAA tournament teams this season and are even better (5-2) against last year's Women's College World Series squads...Eight of the San Diego State's 10 losses have been by two runs or less and two have been in extra innings against top-5 teams UCLA and Arizona State...The Aztecs are 4-2 this season against the Pac-10 and 6-2 against Big West opponents.
UNLV
The Rebels sit 19-19-1 and will return to action on April 2 with a doubleheader against Southern Utah prior to the opening weekend of MWC action...UNLV opened last year's conference season with a 4-0 record, defeating Utah and BYU at Eller Media Stadium.
Utah
Devina Quintero led the Utes last week with four hits, including three doubles and a home run with a .571 average, as well as five RBI...The Utes are tied for the lead in the MWC with 47 stolen bases...Over half of those stolen bases have been by Kelly Matthews (16) or Diana Phillips (15), who rank one-two, respectively, in the conference.
