COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah sophomore Melissa Stahnke and San Diego State right-handed pitcher Bre DeSanta have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Stahnke, a Ridgefield, Wash. product, earned her third career player of the week award with her performance during the opening weekend of conference play. Stahnke went 6-for-12 (.500) from the plate, with a double and two runs scored in helping the Utes to two victories. She hit safely in all four games last week, including a 2-for-3, two RBI performance in the Utes 4-2 victory over conference leader San Diego State in game two of their doubleheader. In the Utes doubleheader against UNLV, she batted 3-for-6 from the dish, smashing a double and scoring two runs. Defensively, she was responsible for seven putouts and 10 assists on the week, while only committing one error. On the season, Stahnke is batting .313, with six homeruns and 18 RBI.

DeSanta appeared in all five Aztec games last week, compiling a 3-0 record and earning a save. She pitched three complete games and struck out nine, while giving up only two earned runs in 22.1 innings of work. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native started the week with a complete game win over UC Santa Barbara, striking out three and giving up eight hits in the process. In SDSU's 9-1 victory over conference foe Utah, DeSanta struck out three and gave up five hits and one run for the complete game victory. In game one of the doubleheader against BYU, she pitched 1.1 innings of relief to preserve the Aztecs 5-4 win. She followed that with her strongest outing of the week in game two, holding BYU scoreless while scattering two hits and striking out three in the Aztecs 2-0 win. DeSanta is 7-7 on the season, and currently leads the conference with a 1.12 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 119.0 innings of work.
