New Mexico Sweeps Weekly Softball Awards Kristina Schmallen and Katie Gregg honored
March 28, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior Kristina Schmallen and senior Katie Gregg were named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the week, respectively. Schmallen, a native of Phoenix, Ariz., blasted two homeruns, eight RBI and scored five runs to lead the MWC's top hitting team to a four-game sweep of Northern Colorado in a pair of doubleheaders. Schmallen, who went 5-10 at the plate with a slugging percentage of 1.100 over the weekend, now leads the MWC with season-highs of nine homeruns and 34 RBI, to go along with a .362 average on the season. She was equally strong in the field over the weekend, recording 10 assists with no errors at second base. In game one of the doubleheader, Schmallen went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, including a three-run homerun to rally UNM from a 5-3 deficit in the fifth inning. With runners on second and third, Schmallen then blasted a 1-1 pitch to deep center, giving the Lobos the lead for good with her ninth long-ball of the season. Gregg, from Overland Park, Kan., picked up four victories and allowed just one run in 14 2/3 innings as the Lobos swept back-to-back doubleheaders from Northern Colorado. Gregg had two complete games as a starter, including her first shutout of the season in the series finale, and pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Northern Colorado hit just .204 and struck out 13 times against her during the weekend. After posting an 8-6 record last season, her first at UNM, Gregg is a career-best 10-4 in 2006.
