San Diego State's Labor and Durazo Sweep McLeodUSA Mtn. West Softball Weekly Honors SDSU does not allow a run in four games during the Aztec Invitational. (3/28)
March 28, 2000
Colorado Springs, Colo. San Diego State University¹s Kellie Labor and Sandra Durazo are this week¹s McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the third player of the week honor of the season for SDSU and the first pitching award. The pair helped the Aztecs to a 4-2 record during the week. After dropping both games of a doubleheader to No. 1-ranked Washington (4-0, 10-2) on Thursday, the Aztecs claimed all four games in the Aztec Invitational. SDSU did not allow a run during the tournament (26 innings) en route to two wins over San Diego (11-0, 1-0) and two over Michigan State (3-0, 4-0). SDSU is now 17-19 overall. Labor, from La Crescenta, Calif., earned the first conference player of the week award of her career and the third of the season for SDSU after hitting .563 (9-for-16) during the week. The senior outfielder who batted fifth during the tournament, scored four runs and had one RBI with a home run and a double. She went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader vs. Washington while hitting in the No. 2 position in the lineup. In the first game of the tournament, Labor went 2-for-2 and scored twice in the 11-0 win over San Diego. She belted her third home run of the season to cap SDSU¹s scoring in the 3-0 win over Michigan State, then scored one run in the 4-0 win over MSU. In the final 1-0 win over USD, the lone run scored in the top of the sixth inning on Labor¹s third sacrifice of the weekend. A product of Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, Calif., Durazo posted a 2-1 record and allowed three earned runs during the week. She struck out 11 batters and scattered 16 hits and six walks over 20.2 innings of work. She threw two complete games, including one shutout and earned a save. In the 11-0 victory over USD, Durazo was throwing a no-hitter going into the fifth inning before being replaced to rest. Also the starter in the second game of the day, Durazo was nearly flawless again. She allowed just three hits and did not walk any batters, while striking out three. She allowed only two hits in 2.2 innings of relief work to earn the save in the 4-0 victory over MSU. Her only loss of the week was to No. 1 Washington, 4-0. This is the third time in her career Durazo has earned conference pitcher of the week honors. She has received the recognition once in each of the past two seasons (April 28, 1998, and March 8, 1999) when SDSU competed in the Western Athletic Conference.
