MWC Weekly Softball Awards New Mexico's Cassie Chavez and Colorado State's Kim Klabough net honors
March 22, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior Cassie Chavez was named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player of the week, while Colorado State freshman Kim Klabough earned MWC Pitcher of the Week honors. Chavez, a native of Carlsbad, N.M., earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Lobos to a 4-1 record at the Lobo Classic last week. In five contests, Chavez hit .429 with seven RBI, a double, two triples and a home run. She was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate in both games vs. South Dakota State and recorded a .950 fielding percentage for the week at the shortstop position. Chavez currently leads New Mexico with a .393 batting average. Klabough, from Sierra Vista, Ariz., pitched a perfect game vs. Jacksonville and picked up three wins to propel the Rams to a 4-0 showing at the Capital Classic last week. She picked up two wins as a starter - both complete games - and one in relief for the Rams. For the tournament, Klabough posted a 0.79 ERA and held opponents to just .133 hitting. She struck out 26 batters in 17.2 innings during the Capital Classic, including a career-high 12 strikeouts in her perfect game against Jacksonville.
