Last Time up at Bat - The Colorado State softball team went on an 11-day road trip in California, March 1-11, to play 16 games in a span of nine days over spring break. The Rams went 1-15 on the trip, with the only victory coming against Long Beach State, 2-0, in Fullerton, Calif. on March 7. Over the span of the week, Colorado State saw action against eight ranked teams, some of which were played more than once.

The Rams opened up the trip at the Easton Showcase in Los Angeles, Calif. with a double-header against No. 1 UCLA and were defeated 11-3 and 2-0. The Rams went on to play No. 14 Oregon State in the second day of this tournament and were blanked with scores of 9-0 and 8-0 for the double-header. Colorado State closed out the Easton Showcase against Cal State-Northridge for a double-header and lost with scores of 3-2 and 11-3.

On the way to Fresno, Colorado State stopped in Fullerton to take on Long Beach State and No. 10 Cal State-Fullerton on March 6. The Rams posted their first win of the trip against LBS, 2-0, with senior Kyla Kiester (Des Moines, Iowa) earning the win and improving her record to 2-3. Colorado State dropped the second game to Fullerton, 12-1.

On March 7 Colorado State competed against No. 7 Fresno State in a double-header and were defeated 12-0 and 9-0, respectively.

The final invitational of the week was the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Rams squared off against Cal Poly SLO on March 8 and were defeated 5-4 and then faced No. 1 UCLA again and lost 8-1. The second day saw familiar competition for Colorado State, while they faced off against No. 15 Oregon State, with the Beavers winning 14-3. Later on that afternoon, the Rams lost a heartbreaker to New Mexico State, 3-2. The Rams rallied back to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the seventh after senior Holly Schmillen (Fort Collins, Colo.) hit a sacrifice-fly to centerfield to drive sophomore Katie Benton (Manhattan, Kan.) home from third base. The game went into extra innings and NMS scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. The Rams closed out their California trip against No. 11 DePaul and No. 7 Fresno State. Colorado State could not pull off a victory and lost 7-1 and 9-0, respectively.

All-Tourney Team - Holly Schmillen was named to the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic All-Tournament Team, which is the second all-tourney team Schmillen has been on this season. Schmillen was named along with Melissa Haley (Cal Poly), Lindsay Chouinard (DePaul), Becky Witt (Fresno State), Heather Nobbe (New Mexico State), Crystal Draper (Oregon State) and Tairia Mims (UCLA).

Three Amigos - Thus far this season, three Rams have started in the same position for all 24 games: Amanda Kocis (second base), Holly Schmillen (shortstop) and Angie Kitchen (third base).

History of Competition - This will be the fourth meeting between Wisconsin-Green Bay and Colorado State with the Rams leading the series, 3-0. The last meeting between these two schools was on March 14, 1998 where Colorado State walked away with a 6-3 victory.

Colorado State and Iowa have not met each other on the mound in a decade's time and have only squared off twice in Ram softball history. The last meeting was on Feb. 23, 1991 where Iowa blanked Colorado State, 1-0. The Hawkeyes lead the all-time series, 2-0.

Nebraska has an edge on Colorado State with a series lead of 9-4. The last time these schools battled it out on the diamond was March 12, 1999 at the National Invitational Softball Tournament in San Jose, Calif., where the Rams defeated the Huskers 3-1.

Scouting the Competitors - Wisconsin-Green Bay has participated in one competition thus far this season and is currently playing at the Rebel Spring Games. At the Metrodome Softball Classic Feb. 8-10, WGB went 1-5 on the weekend. WGB suffered losses to Louisville, 7-3, and Minnesota, 2-1, the first day of play. The second day WGB split its two games and beat Northern Iowa, 5-2, but fell to Western Illinois 3-0. On Feb. 10 WGB notched two more losses against Western Illinois, 6-3, and Northern Iowa, 10-1.

Iowa is currently 18-6 overall, with its last competition at the Capitol City Classic in Sacramento, Calif. Mar. 15-18. The Hawkeyes went 5-1 over the weekend with wins over San Jose State, 5-0, Mississippi, 10-0 and 4-3, No. 3 California, 1-0, and Brigham Young, 2-1. The first game against Mississippi only went five innings, while the win over California lasted eight innings. The game that Iowa lost was to Texas Tech, 9-1, in five innings.

Nebraska's (No. 18) last invitational was in Tallahassee, Fla. where the Huskers swept away the competition. Nebraska shutout five of the six schools it played against March 14-17. The Huskers notched wins over Florida State, 3-0, Syracuse, 8-0 and 3-0, Florida Atlantic, 2-1, Bethune Cookman, 6-0, and Michigan, 5-0. The Huskers overall record is 21-9.
