Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week San Diego State's Nordhagen and UNLV's Kerrigan take home conference honors.
March 19, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State outfielder Kellie Nordhagen and UNLV right-handed pitcher Jackie Kerrigan have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Nordhagen, a native of Valencia, Calif., batted .500 (8-for-16) from the plate, including three multiple-hit games, with three doubles and one RBI while scoring five runs in six games for the Aztecs last week. She started the week going 4-for-8 from the plate, with two doubles and one run scored in a doubleheader against UC Riverside. Her best performance of the week came in the first of two games against San Diego at the San Diego State Tri-Tournament, where she smashed a career-high three hits, with an RBI and one run scored in the Aztecs 4-2 win. In game two against the Toreros, Nordhagen went 1-for-3 from the dish, with a double and three runs scored, leading San Diego State to a 7-1 win. Nordhagen is currently batting .298 this season and is the Aztec career leader in hits (221) and runs scored (109).
Kerrigan garnered her second pitcher of the week honor of the season with her performance at last week's Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif. The Eugene, Ore., product appeared in four of the six contests for the Rebels, pitching a complete game and compiling a record of 3-1 for the tournament. She gave up 13 hits and two walks while striking out 15 and giving up one earned run in 21.2 innings of work. Against Sacramento State, Kerrigan retired the first nine batters she faced on the way to a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out three and allowing one walk in the process. Kerrigan followed that up by coming on in relief to win games against Middle Tennessee State (4-2) and Long Island (6-2). Against Middle Tennessee State, she struck out two while giving up no runs and one walk in two innings of work. In UNLV's victory over Long Island, Kerrigan pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out six to preserve the victory. Kerrigan currently has a record of 7-7 with a 1.65 ERA and a team leading 69 strikeouts.
