McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Player of the Week
Lyndsey Trevis, So., 3B, Utah Trevis, from Glendora, Calif., batted .400 (6-for-15) with eight RBI and scored five runs in the six games. The sophomore, who primarily plays third base and hits in the No. 4 slot in the lineup, notched home runs and collected seven of her eight RBI in Utah¹s two wins. In the 13-12 win over No. 20 Long Beach State, she went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a home run. She went 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBI and two runs in the 10-2 win over Virginia. In Utah¹s four losses, that included No. 4 Arizona State and No. 6 California, she was a collective 3-for-9 at the plate. The Utes are 12-13 overall. This is the first weekly conference honor for Trevis and the first award of the season for Utah. McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week
Nicole Truax, So., P, UNLV Truax, a product of Green Valley High in Las Vegas, did not allow an earned run in three appearances. She notched two complete-game wins over Eastern Illinois and threw one-third of an inning as a reliever vs. LA-Lafayette. She struck out 10, walked five, scattered six hits and was charged with five unearned runs in 14.1 innings. Truax improved to 7-3 on the season while UNLV stands 13-9. This is the first weekly conference honor for Truax and the second pitching award for UNLV. The Rebels have also claimed the player award once. First Conference Action Nears
Team-by-Team Notes Competing at the Worth Classic in Norman, Okla., Colorado State went 1-3 and split a doubleheader with Oklahoma City University before the tournament. Holly Schmillen (Jr., SS) hit .385 in the tournament and blasted five home runs during the week. Batting .433 on the season, Schmillen already owns 21 RBI and is closing quickly on last year¹s season total of 24. Kyla Keister (Jr., P) has already surpassed her 24-strikeout total from last season, amassing 35 already this year. The Rams will take a week off before traveling to Nebraska for a three-game series Mar. 28-29. Following a week off from competition, New Mexico will seek career victory No. 600 for head coach Susan Craig during the South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Fla., Mar. 16-19. Craig, who is in her 24th season at UNM, stands 21st among active Division I coaches and 24th overall in career victories and brings a 596-523 (.533) record into the week. The Lobos received 25 votes for No. 30 in last week¹s national poll and lead the league with a team batting average of .303 on the season. San Diego State went 2-2 in a pair of home doubleheaders this past week. The Aztecs swept Southern Utah (5-0, 3-1), but lost both to Notre Dame (3-0, 11-3). SDSU broke a 33-inning streak in which the Irish had held opponents scoreless when it got on the board in game two. Leadoff hitter Kellie Nordhagen (So., CF) batted .750 (9-for-12) for the week, including a 4-for-4 effort in the second Southern Utah game, and leads the conference with a .494 season average. She is riding an eight-game hitting streak and has collected at least one hit in 21 of 25 games. Sarah Durazo (Jr., P) tossed her second one-hitter of the season in the first Southern Utah game. This week, the Aztecs host Iowa Tuesday in a game added to the schedule just last week, then travel to the Red Raider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas Saturday and Sunday. After receiving seven votes for No. 40 in the national rankings, UNLV went 2-2 in a mini-tournament in Lafayette, La., Mar. 11-12. The Lobos claimed two games from Eastern Illinois (8-2, 5-2), but lost to host No. 16 LA-Lafayette twice (8-0, 6-0). Nicole Truax (So., P) earned the second conference pitcher of the week honor for the Rebels this season and the first of her career as she did not allow an earned run and posted both wins. The Rebel staff leads the conference with a combined 2.97 ERA. Erica Vollweiler (Sr., CF) led the Rebels by hitting .384 during the week. Rachel Goodpaster (Jr., SS) returned to action for the first time since suffering a knee injury on Feb. 26. The Rebels travel to the KIA Klassic in Fullerton, Calif., to face DePaul, Oregon State and Oklahoma this week.
Playing in its fifth tournament of the season, Utah posted a 2-4 record at the National Invitational
Softball Tournament in San Jose, Calif, March 10-12. The Utes¹ upset No. 20 Long Beach State
(13-12), but suffered two losses to nationally ranked opponents No. 4 Arizona State (2-0) and No.
4 California (4-0). Lyndsey Trevis (So., 3B) claimed the Utes¹ first conference player of the week
award as she hit .400 (6-for-15) with eight RBI and five runs scored during the tournament. This
week, the Utes¹ continue to play on the road as they travel to the Capital Softball Tournament in
Sacramento, Calif., Thursday through Sunday.
