Colorado Springs, Colo. University of New Mexico junior Kathy Moore is the first softball player to claim both of the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. Moore, from Garden Grove, Calif., plays first base when she is not pitching and enjoyed an exceptional week at the plate as well as in the circle. During the week UNM posted a 5-1 record en route to the title at the Texas A&M Invitational, falling only to the host in the final game, but claiming the title in the tiebreaker. The Lobos improved to 16-8 overall and moved head coach Susan Craig to within four games of the 600-win mark for her career.

As a pitcher Moore posted an 0.93 ERA and 2-1 record with a save in four appearances. She threw three complete games, including one shutout, struck out 13 and walked just three in 22.2 innings. Her bid for a perfect game was spoiled by a seventh-inning error, but she did notch a no-hitter in the Lobos 8-0 victory over Mississippi on Saturday. She started the week with a 6-2 complete-game win over Mississippi on Friday and earned the save in the Lobos 9-5 victory over Minnesota. She took the loss, 3-1, against host Texas A&M in Sunday¹s final game. For the tournament she held opponents to a .143 batting average and allowed just one extra base hit.

At the plate for the week, Moore amassed a 1.000 slugging percentage and .524 on-base percentage to go with a .412 batting average. She totaled seven hits in 17 at-bats and collected two home runs, including a grand slam, and four doubles with six RBI. On Saturday alone, she hit a home run, a grand slam and two doubles in a 5-for-7 performance in the two wins. The grand slam and two doubles came in a 3-for-4 effort as she tossed the no-hitter against Mississippi.

This is Moore¹s first player of the week honor and her second pitcher of the week selection this season. It is the first player award for New Mexico and the fourth time UNM has claimed the pitcher honor.
