Softball Player And Pitcher Of The Week BYU's Ashlyn Russell and San Diego State's Melissa Owens earn weekly honors.
March 8, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU's Ashlyn Russell and San Diego State's Melissa Owens were named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitchers of the Week, respectively. It marked the first career honor for both student-athletes.
Russell, a Maui, Hawaii, native, had a game-winning hit and made significant offensive contributions over the weekend. The third-baseman ripped a two-run single against No. 14 Texas A&M in the bottom of the fifth inning to give BYU the victory by the eight-run rule. She also hit a homerun and had four RBIs against the top-25 team. Her game-winning hit came in the bottom of the sixth inning against College of Charleston on a two-out RBI single to give the Cougars a 5-4 victory. She tallied nine RBI in five games.
Owens, hailing from San Diego, Calif., tossed a complete game one-hitter and struck out a career-high eight batters in SDSU's 8-0 win over San Diego in six innings. The eight strikeouts are the most by an Aztec this season. The right-handed pitcher did not allow a walk in the game and retired the final 12 batters she faced after giving up a leadoff double in the third inning. Owens also earned the win against Loyola Marymount (7-2) after allowing no runs and five hits in four innings. She also struck out five batters and did not give up a walk. In 17.0 innings this season, Owens is 3-0 with a team-low ERA of 0.39.
