Non-Conference Success
Mountain West softball teams are 54-25-1 through its third week of play. Last week, San Diego State knocked off the defending national champion #9/#10 Arizona and #2/#3 Northwestern at the Palm Springs Tournament. New Mexico went 2-2 at its home tournament, while CSU recorded a 3-2 record. BYU went 2-1 at the Tennessee Classic, and UNLV struggled to a 1-4 mark in Palm Springs. Utah had the week off.

In The Rankings
San Diego State continued its climb in the USA Today/NFCA poll at No. 21 and the ESPN.com/USA Collegiate Softball poll at No. 20 this week after defeating No. 3/2 Northwestern and No. 9/10 Arizona. UNLV and Colorado State are are also receiving votes in both polls.

BYU
The Cougars have eight batters hitting over .300 and are led by Angeline Quiocho who is hitting .524...The team carries a .325 batting average...BYU has hit 18 home runs in 14 games...Angeline Quiocho's 11-game hitting streak came to an end last week but Daniela Snow still maintains a 10-game hitting streak.

Colorado State
Colorado State is off to its best start in school history with an 11-2 record, surpassing the mark set by the 1989 squad that started 10-2...Through the first 13 games, the Rams have recorded a .311 batting average with 23 doubles, two triples, and 15 home runs...The Colorado State pitching staff has a combined 2.54 ERA in 91 innings pitched with 68 strikeouts and only 25 walks...Freshman Caitlan Stem is beginning her college softball career on a high note as she has started every game this season at short stop for the Rams and has a .391 batting average through 13 games...This past weekend, Stem batted an even .400 at the USD Tournament with two doubles, a triple and four RBI...In the field, Stem has a .941 overall fielding percentage with 18 putouts and 46 assists...Senior Cayte Billman once again dominated in the circle this weekend as she earned two more wins to give her a 6-0 record overall...This past weekend, Billman earned a 1.17 ERA in 12 innings of work.

New Mexico
New Mexico softball went 2-2 last weekend in the Lobo Invitational with victories over Missouri and Texas Tech...UNM is hitting .269 as a team and has four players hitting over .300...Sophomore Sara Loeffelholz leads the team with a .387 batting average, while senior Lindsey Elcess is hitting .375...Freshmen Gabriella Parra and Tianna George are also hitting over .300 this season...Senior Kelly Ninemire is leading the pitching staff with a 3-2 record and a 1.93 ERA.

San Diego State
San Diego State is 11-4 and off to its second best start in school history...Only the 2006 squad, which went on to finish 34-15 with its best record in program history, had a better start at 12-3...Ten of SDSU's 15 games have been against 2007 NCAA Tournament teams, where the Aztecs are 6-4, including a 2-1 mark against 2007 WCWS schools...San Diego State had its season-long nine-game winning streak snapped in a 1-0 loss to Oklahoma on Saturday...The nine-game win streak is the longest since the 2006 squad won a school-record 13 straight contests from March 31-April 29...LHP Christina Ross went 2-2 with a 0.60 ERA in 23 1/3 innings...She struck out 30 batters, including a season-high 11 against #10/#9 Arizona on Friday night...RF Brittany Knudsen (.500, .588 OB%) and LF/CF Tamani Wells (.471, 3 SB) each led the SDSU offense over the weekend.

UNLV
UNLV opened up the week with an 11-1, five-inning run-ruled win over Seton Hall, but then went 1-5 at the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif...The Rebels defeated Michigan State, but dropped contests against nationally-ranked teams, Stanford, Texas and Georgia...The Rebels moved up to 18th in last week's ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll, which was the highest ranking for UNLV since they opened up the 1997 season at #13 in the NFCA Poll...Rosa Ordaz was the top hitter for UNLV, on the week, as she hit .421 with eight hits and nine RBI...She went 3-for-3 with five RBI vs. Seton Hall and notched her first home run of 2008 in a 6-3 win over Michigan State.

Utah
Ashley Smuda has started all but one game this year at pitcher for Utah......Staci Hemingway had 10 RBI during the tournament...Five of those came in a career-high performance against Texas State...Former all-region player Diana Phillips started all five games after sitting out most of last weekend with an injury. She went 6-for-16 with two doubles and a .375 batting average.
