Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

SDSU's Knudsen and Ross honored

Feb. 26, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore outfielder Brittany Knudsen and senior lefthander Christina Ross have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Knudsen, from San Diego, Calif., batted a team-best .500 (7-for-14) to lead the Aztecs to a 2-3 record at the Palm Springs Classic, where SDSU faced five top-20 teams, including three 2007 WCWS teams. Over the weekend, she led the squad in total bases (10), triples (1), slugging percentage (.714), walks (3) and on-base percentage (.588). Against two-time defending NCAA champion Arizona, Knudsen went 2-for-3, including her first triple of the season and first against a Wildcat pitcher since April 2, 2005 (132 games). She would go on to score the game-winning run on teammate Dani Sidoti's single. In the Aztecs' 3-2 win against #3/#2 Northwestern, she went 1-for-2 with a double and walk. She also contributed on defense as she collected All-American Tammy Williams' single and threw out the base-runner at home. On the very next play, Knudsen made a run-saving diving catch on a hit toward the right-center field gap. She also had a single and drew a walk against #6/#8 Oklahoma on Saturday and followed with a single against #18/#19 Georgia. In the final game of the weekend, she went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk in the Aztecs' 7-5 loss to #13/#10 Baylor.

Ross, a Santa Clarita, Calif., native, posted a 2-2 record with a 0.60 ERA against four top-20 teams over the weekend. She allowed 19 hits and four walks in 23 1/3 innings, while striking out 30 and holding opponents to a .207 batting average. Ross struck out a season-high 11 batters and gave up just seven hits and one unearned run in SDSU's 2-1 upset over two-time defending NCAA champion #9/#10 Arizona. She picked up her second win of the night against #3/#2 Northwestern after tossing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven of the 11 batters she faced. In the Aztecs' 7-6 loss to #18/#19 Georgia, she struck out three and gave up a single in an inning of relief.
