Feb. 24, 2000

Colorado Springs, Colo. San Diego State¹s Kellie Nordhagen and UNLV¹s Geney Orris, both sophomores, are this week¹s Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

This is the first player of the week honor for Nordhagen, who batted .650 as the Aztecs posted a 2-3 record at their own Campbell/Cartier Classic. San Diego State is now 4-10 on the season. During the tournament, the product of Hart High School in Valencia, Calif., collected 13 hits in 20 at-bats over the five games, scored five runs and drove in three en route to all-tournament honors.

On Feb. 17, the Aztecs¹ leadoff hitter opened the tournament with a double to left field. She went 3-for-5 and scored twice in the Aztecs¹ 6-1 win over Ohio State. In a 7-4 loss to CS Sacramento the next day, she hit 2-for-4 and scored once. Later that same day, she went 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Aztecs came back from a four-run deficit in the seventh to defeat Pacific, 7-5. On Saturday, Nordhagen scored the Aztecs¹ only run and hit 3-for-4 in a 2-1 loss to Arkansas, then drove in SDSU¹s lone run in a 3-1 loss to No. 21 Stanford as she collected a double among two more hits. Defensively, the center fielder made five putouts and one error.

Orris, from Brea, Calif. (Brea Olinda HS), posted a 3-0 record and 0.67 ERA in four appearances for the Rebels at the UNLV Classic. The Rebels went 5-1 during the week and improved to 9-4 on the season. Orris pitched a total of 21.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs. She scattered 10 hits and four walks while striking out 20 of the 81 batters faced. She threw three complete game shutouts in the four appearances.

Orris opened the tournament with a two-hit, five-strikeout performance in the complete game shutout (3-0) over Virginia on Feb. 18. Later that day she tossed a one-hitter and struck out five in a 1-0 complete game win over No. 11 Oregon State. The following day, Orris fanned 10 batters and scattered four hits in another complete-game shutout, this time over No. 13 Nebraska, 1-0. The only team to have success against Orris, was No. 12 California, which scored two earned runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning on Saturday, Feb. 20. She was relieved and did not suffer the loss as UNLV fell 9-3 to the Bears.
